The importance of healthy soil and the role of biodegradable products in this.
Besides the oceans, (agricultural) soils are also increasingly being polluted by persistent microplastics. This can be tackled by reducing compost contamination. To achieve this, the influx of contamination into composting processes must be addressed. Thirty years of awareness-raising has not yielded the necessary results. A change of plan is urgently needed.
Currently, the recycling of biodegradable packaging in Belgium is being hampered by a chicken-and-egg blockade, which also jeopardizes valuable ecological development. The government must not allow this!
These guidelines will offer a clear framework and practical tools to assess when and where compostable items are most appropriate, and which materials are best suited for their design. The document also provides design recommendations, highlights potential use cases, and outlines proper end-of-life handling for compostable products.
